Regulatory Status and Therapeutic Context
In Australia, nicotine-containing vaping products (NVPs) are classified as therapeutic goods by the Therapeutic Goods Administration (TGA) and are regulated accordingly. These products, including those supplied by Bay Pharma, are not registered on the Australian Register of Therapeutic Goods (ARTG) and are therefore considered unapproved therapeutic goods. NVPs have not been approved as smoking cessation or nicotine dependence treatments in Australia.
NVPs are not first-line treatments for smoking cessation or nicotine dependence. However, they may be considered for individuals who have not achieved cessation with approved treatments and who remain motivated to quit, following consultation with a healthcare practitioner. Their use should be guided by an evidence-informed, shared decision-making process, avoidning dual use alongside tobacco smoking.
Supply is restricted to pharmacies and other authorised healthcare settings in accordance with relevant scheduling, quality, and labelling requirements. These products are not supplied for recreational use.
